چکیده
Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential raw materials in a variety of industries including clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles and wind turbines. This places an ever-increasing demand on global rare element production. Coal fly ash (CFA) possesses appreciable levels REEs. CFA, waste by-product coal combustion, is therefore readily available source REEs that does not require mining. CFA valorisation to zeolites has been achieved via various synthesis pathways. study aimed evaluate one pathway by monitoring how partition during processing the wet, magnetic separation process zeolitisation. South African was subjected subsequent zeolitisation nonmagnetic fraction (NMF); solid products were characterised XRD, SEM, XRF LA-ICP-MS. The resulted partitioning specific set transition metals (such Fe, Mn, Cr, V, Ni, Zn, Cu, Co Mo) into (MF) while partitioned NMF with total REE content 530.2 ppm; thus, matrix extracted ease. Zeolitisation zeolite product (hydroxysodalite) 537.6 ppm. also selective enrichment Ce (259.1 ppm) (hydroxysodalite), other largely liquid phase. allowed for extraction recovering Si Al. findings this highlight geopolitical importance terms development alternative processes recovery from sources, which may potentially give countries employ develop technology key advantage production market.

Coal fly ash as a resource for rare earth elements
Rare earth elements (REE) have been recognised as critical raw materials, crucial for many clean technologies. As the gap between their global demand and supply increases, the search for their alternative resources becomes more and more important, especially for the countries which depend highly on their import. Coal fly ash (CFA), which when not utilised is considered waste, has been regarded ...
متن کاملDistributional Fate of Elements during the Synthesis of Zeolites from South African Coal Fly Ash
The synthesis of zeolites from South African coal fly ash has been deemed a viable solution to the growing economical strain caused by the disposal of ash in the country. Two synthesis routes have been studied thus far namely the 2-step method and the fusion assisted process. Fly ash contains several elements originating from coal which is incorporated in the ash during combustion. It is vital ...
متن کاملDissolution of Rare Earth Elements from Coal Fly Ash Particles in a Dilute H2SO4 Solvent
Recently, the worldwide supply of rare earth element (REE) resources will be severely restricted. On the other hand, coal fly ash particles emitted from coal-fired electric power plants contain relatively high concentrations of REEs. The contents of REEs in coal fly ash are regularly several hundreds of ppmw. In order to extract and recover REEs from coal fly ash particles, as a first step, we ...
متن کاملWaste Minimization Protocols for the Process of Synthesizing Zeolites from South African Coal Fly Ash
Production of a high value zeolite from fly ash has been shown to be an avenue for the utilization of South African fly ash which presently constitutes a huge disposal problem. The synthesis of zeolites Na-P1 and analcime on a micro-scale has been successful and preliminary investigation shows that scale-up synthesis is promising. However, the post-synthesis supernatant waste generated contains...
متن کاملDirect synthesis of carbon nanofibers from South African coal fly ash
Carbon nanofibers (CNFs), cylindrical nanostructures containing graphene, were synthesized directly from South African fly ash (a waste product formed during the combustion of coal). The CNFs (as well as other carbonaceous materials like carbon nanotubes (CNTs)) were produced by the catalytic chemical vapour deposition method (CCVD) in the presence of acetylene gas at temperatures ranging from ...
